Question: I don’t feel as confident as other people seem to be about whether God will allow me into heaven when I die. Is it possible to be sure that I am a Christian?
Answer: Absolutely, you can be sure!
A Christian is a Christ-believer and follower of Jesus Christ. Think about when you first began praying and asking Jesus to be a part of your life. It doesn’t matter whether you remember the exact day and time that you believed Jesus died on a cross to pay for your sins and was resurrected, but He certainly knows. You asked for forgiveness and invited God to guide you each day through His Holy Spirit. Rest easy that your place with Him is not contingent on anything you have earned. Salvation is what HE has accomplished on your behalf, not on what you think you have deserved. It is a gift from Him to you!
“For God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in Him shall never perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but so that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:16-17
Are you worried that you might not have said the right words to ask Jesus to come into your life? Jesus knows your heart so your adoption by Him doesn’t hinge on your words. The Bible doesn’t tell us there are any “magic” words to utter. The way you pray doesn’t save you, but Jesus does! Prayer, or talking with Him, and reading your Bible keeps your mind open to His comfort and guidance for today and in the future. God’s Spirit led the apostle Paul to write:
“That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved… Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:9-10, 13
Jesus said: “…Abide in my words and you are my disciples. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
And Jesus said that HE HIMSELF IS THAT TRUTH!
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
Christianity is the only world religion in which someone can know for certain his eternal destination is secure with God. Your assurance of Jesus’ presence in your life shouldn’t depend on your feelings and emotions but on the promises of God in the Bible. It reveals that Jesus is known in Heaven as “The Lamb,” and once you accepted Jesus’ free gift of salvation, your name was written in the Lamb’s Book of Life in Heaven (Revelation 20:12-15), and it can NEVER be erased! When you go through times of feeling distant from God because of your lack of communication through prayer, He is STILL there, at your side, as your everlasting Father. As the perfect parent, he never abandons you or gives up on you. Jesus said:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” John 10:27-29
Thanks to the promises of the truth about Jesus setting us free, we can be free from any more doubt about where we will live forever after our earthly death! If you have not taken the steps to tell God you believe and trust Him, say something like this right now:
Lord God, I know I have made many mistakes and ignored your attempts to love me and bring me close to you. I have been selfish and immersed in only what I thought I wanted. I need the peace you promise to give when I trust you. I realize that I desperately need you in my life, and I want to turn away from my past and follow you from now on. I am sorry for all that I have done against you, my family, and many others. Thank you for promising that you forgive me as soon as I ask! I read how the Bible tells you came into the world, lived your short life, died on a cross to pay the ultimate penalty for my sins, and was resurrected from the dead. You know I don’t fully understand this, but I trust that you did this just as the Bible records. I am excited to know I will live again after death the same way that you live now! I am watching for your guidance. Help me to talk with you every day and show me the church where you would teach me all about you. Thank you, and amen!
“And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7
